I am sixteen years old and I will be a junior at Westridge School in the fall. At the start of this program, our mentor Reena said something that really stuck with me throughout this process. She explained that when you hear an original composition, you are hearing a piece of the composer’s soul. That statement truly inspires me and my efforts to convey my most true self through the music I write.

My name is Tiffany Shi and I just completed my sophomore year at San Marino High School. Alongside the endless support of my family, friends, and teachers, I've dabbled and played with different types of music all my life, and there's just this really empathetic and powerful connection you see with music and audience, a sort of tangible intimacy that you can almost feel, and that's something I try my best to keep in mind when I compose -- a desire to connect with others through music and create something that wills people to really feel. I'm endlessly and incredibly grateful to the Pasadena Master Chorale as well as our mentors for this opportunity.
AVERY ROBERTS

Avery Roberts is a senior at Pasadena High School, and a member of the Young Men’s Ensemble of the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus. He will begin studies Chapman University in the fall.
OLIVIA SHUE

I am going in to 12th grade and this is my first time composing for a choir. I was inspired by my choir teacher, Ted Masur, who always has a joyful way of composing and is such a wonderful teacher as well as my favorite poet, Walt Whitman who taught me to sing at the top of my lungs.

REENA ESMAIL

Indian-American composer Reena Esmail enjoys working in both the Western and Hindustani (North Indian) classical music idioms. Esmail holds a bachelors degree in composition from The Juilliard School, and a masters degree from the Yale School of Music.
SHAWN KIRCHNER
composer mentor
Family Composer in Residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale. His choral compositions are performed throughout the United States and abroad in concert halls, churches, schools, and on radio, television (and YouTube!). In recent years, Kirchner has been mentored in choral arranging and music philosophy by Alice Parker.
